Authors’ Guidelines
Journal of Health Policy and Management (JHPM) welcomes original research articles, systematic reviews, and meta-analyses in the field of health policy and health care management. All submitted manuscripts must adhere to the following guidelines to ensure consistency and quality of publication.
1. Manuscript Structure
Full-length manuscripts must be structured into the following sections: Background, Subjects and Methods, Results, and Discussion. The abstract should follow the same structure, using the subheadings: Background, Subjects and Methods, Results, and Conclusion, and must not exceed 250 words. The maximum word count for full papers—including original research, systematic reviews, and meta-analyses—is 7,000 words. These limits exclude references, tables, and figures.
2. Formatting Requirements
Manuscripts must be submitted in Microsoft Word format, using Georgia font, size 11.5, and 1.15 line spacing. The manuscript should be clearly written and logically organized. Tables and figures should not be embedded in the manuscript text but must be submitted as separate files. Authors should clearly indicate the placement of each table and figure within the text using notations such as:
[Insert Table 1 here]
[Insert Figure 2 here]
3. Tables and Figures
All tables and figures must be numbered consecutively in the order they are mentioned in the text. Titles should be concise yet descriptive. Tables should be created using Word's table function, and figures should be high-quality images submitted in Word or image formats (e.g., PNG, JPEG). Each table and figure must be accompanied by a title and, if necessary, footnotes to explain abbreviations or statistical details.
4. Citation and Referencing
JHPM uses the Harvard citation and reference system. In-text citations should include the author’s last name and year of publication. For example: (Smith, 2020) or (Jones and Lee, 2021). For more than two authors, use the format (Taylor et al., 2019). All cited references must be listed at the end of the manuscript in alphabetical order and formatted according to Harvard style.
For example:
Smith J (2020). Public health strategies in urban communities. Oxford University Press.
Kawachi I, & Berkman LF (2001). Social ties and mental health. Journal of Urban Health, 78(3), 458–467. https://doi.org/10.1093/jurban/78.3.458
Simmons B. (2020) How to stay productive while working from home, Forbes. Available at: https://www.forbes.com/work-from-home-productivity. Accessed: 11 June 2025.
5. Statistical Reporting
To ensure consistency, transparency, and precision in data presentation, authors must adhere to the following statistical reporting standards:
Numerical Formatting
Use a decimal point (.) rather than a comma (,) for decimal values.
Example:
- ✅ Correct: Mean Hb = 12.4 g/dL
- ❌ Incorrect: Mean Hb = 12,4 g/dL
Use commas to separate thousands, millions, etc.
- ✅ Example: “The study included a sample size of 1,000 participants.”
- ✅ Example: “The population was approximately 2,500,000.”
Summary Statistics
Report means, proportions, and standard deviations to one or two decimal places.
Example:
- ✅ Example: Mean body weight = 72.4 kg
- ✅ Example: Prevalence = 15.7%
P-Values
Report all p-values to three decimal places.
✅ Example: p = 0.027
If the p-value is smaller than 0.001, report as:
✅ Example: p < 0.001
Model Estimates and Confidence Intervals
Always report point estimates from statistical models (e.g., regression) along with 95% confidence intervals. Use an equals sign after "CI" and an en dash (–) for interval ranges.
✅ Example: Poor sleep is associated with an increased risk of depression (adjusted OR = 2.30; 95% CI = 1.45–3.78; p = 0.022).
Additional Considerations
- Indicate the type of statistical test used when relevant (e.g., chi-square test, t-test, ANOVA, logistic regression).
- Specify adjustments or covarites included in regression models.
- Clearly define all abbreviations and statistical terms at first use in the text or in table footnotes.
- Ensure consistency in statistical reporting between the text, tables, and figures.
6. Submission Checklist
Before submitting your manuscript, please ensure the following:
- ✅ Manuscript adheres to JHPM structure and formatting requirements
- ✅ Abstract is within 250 words
- ✅ Total word count for original research, systematic reviews, and meta-analyses does not exceed 7,000 words.
- ✅ References are formatted in Harvard style
- ✅ All tables and figures are numbered, captioned, and submitted separately
- ✅ Statistical values follow JHPM's decimal and formatting rules
- ✅ Ethics approval, conflict of interest, and authorship declarations are clearly stated (if applicable)
7. Recommendation for Authors
Strict adherence to these guidelines will expedite the peer review and publication process. Manuscripts that do not comply may be returned for revision prior to review.
